Cotton yarn is a natural fibre obtained from the fibres surrounding the seeds of the cotton plant. After harvesting, the cotton is cleaned, carded, then spun to form more or less fine and resistant yarns.
Its main characteristics are: softness to the touch, breathability, hypoallergenic guarantee, good wear resistance, easy maintenance that supports hot washes and finally biodegradability
There are several types of cotton yarn:
- Carded cotton: more irregular appearance, cheaper: you won’t find any on the site.
- Combed cotton: long fibers, smoother and resistant
- Mercerized cotton: treated to be shinier, stronger and better paintable
- Organic cotton: grown without chemical pesticides
On the other hand, it is easily and durably dyed, it can be matte or shiny (mercerized) and exists in fine threads (sewing) or thick (knitting, crocheting)
It also has some disadvantages: little elastic, it can shrink in the wash, it dries slowly and is sensitive to mold if it remains wet. Its cultivation requires a lot of water.
